Spiritual Journey

Beginner ~ Intermediate ~ Advanced

Beginner … Newby … Learner … Apprentice? Are you new to the Bible? Beginning your journey? New to knowing Christ personally? Would you like to know who exactly God is and how God can impact your life?

Intermediate … Apprentice … Transitional … Center Point? I know about God, I believe in Him, but I would like to know more. How do I reengage with the Bible? I want to read my Bible, but never have the time. I would like to have a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ. I would like to know how to live a more fulfilling Spiritual life.

Advanced … Regular Studier … Avant-garde? I study the Bible regularly. I would like further direction for living the Word and integrating it into my life. I would like to know what other resources are out there for me to continue growing in faith.

Beginner

The Bible is a big book, consisting of 66 different parts written by several dozen authors. Readers who approach it like any other bookbeginning with page 1 and proceeding toward the endsoon find themselves lost in a bewildering maze of ancient history. Some people never even consider or start a reading plan. With busy schedules and limited confidence, they feel sure they’ll fail. Instead, they limit their reading to familiar passages from the Gospels or the Psalms, avoiding unfamiliar books.

To get started, we recommend trying the two-week guided tour featured below on this site. This reading plan takes two weeks, reading one chapter a day. By following this plan, you can encounter some of the most significant parts of the Bible. Just a few hours invested can yield a solid introduction to the best of books! The following are recommended 30-day reading plans for beginners.

    Three-Year Plan:

Three-Track Plan for Reading the Bible

Of all the reasons people mention for not reading the Bible, simple discouragement ranks highest. The Bible's length alone, about 1,000 pages, is imposing. More like a self-contained library than a book, it includes 66 different books by several dozen authors. Little wonder people get confused and discouraged. The following three-track reading plan helps break the Bible into more manageable portions. If you're new to the Bible, begin with Track 1, then proceed to Track 2, and finallyif you're ambitioustackle Track 3. Your understanding and appreciation for the Bible should gradually increase. All three tracks share one thing in common: they each assign usually one chapter a day. Reading an average Bible chapter should take only 5 to 10 minutes. Note that the three-track plan for each book is included within the introduction to the book.

Track 1: Introduction to the Bible

Track 1 is a place to begin reading the Bible. Three two-week reading courses take you quickly into passages of the Bible every Christian should know. These were selected with two things in mind. First, they are frequently quoted or referred to. And second, they are relatively easy to read and understand. Track 1 is a sampler, designed to whet your appetite for more.

  • Track 2: Every Book in the Bible

Track 2 includes 186 of the 1,189 chapters in the Bible. Many well-known parts of the Bible are not represented, and from some books (Leviticus, for example), you will read only a single chapter. These 186 chapters have been selected because they are understandable to the average reader without commentary. Taken together, they provide a good foundation of Bible understanding. If you miss a few days, don't worry. Just resume reading when you can, about a chapter a day. In 180 total days, you will get an overview that includes something from every book in the Bible. Track 2 recommends reading the introduction to each book. You may also find it helpful to read the insights that appear next to the assigned chapters.

Track 3: Every Word of the Bible

Track 3 takes you completely through the Bible, reading every word. Other Bible reading plans allot only a year for this project, requiring that at least three chapters be read each day. But many readers find such a pace to be unrealistic and discouraging. For this reason, Track 3 assigns usually only one chapter a day. (Some short chapters have been combined, so occasionally you will read two brief chapters in a day.) In all, the reading plan works out evenly to a three-year total. The Track 3 plan alternates between the Old Testament and New Testament. This mixing provides variety and reduces the fatigue that may set in from reading long sections of the Old Testament.
