What does your video publishing consist of?

Entertaining, educational, inspirational, and informational video programs—on VHS and DVD—are an important component of Zondervan's publishing enterprise. We work to visually provide you with the insights of our authors beyond the printed page.

What's closed-captioning? What are subtitles? What's the difference?
If you or someone you know is hearing impaired, you may want to watch a video with closed-captions or subtitles turned on. When either of these is turned on, the screen displays text as part of the picture, so the viewer can read the dialogue in addition to or instead of listening to the video.

Closed-captions are encoded on a VHS tape or DVD. If you have a closed-captioned video and want to view it with the closed-captions turned on, you must have a TV that supports closed-captions or a device that decodes closed-captions for your TV. Many TVs have a Display menu that allows you to turn closed-captions on or off. When turned on, the TV decodes the closed captions and displays them on screen.

Subtitles are offered as an option on many DVDs. In contrast, subtitles on VHS tapes are permanently displayed as part of the picture. Most DVDs with subtitles have a Setup option that is accessible from the DVD’s main menu. At the Setup screen, you can select which subtitles you want displayed, since most DVDs offer subtitles in many different languages.

Closed-captions and subtitles are similar in purpose, but require different technologies to implement. Be sure to read a video’s packaging to see if it has closed-captioning or subtitles. If you require closed-captions, you’ll need the right kind of TV. If you want to display subtitles, you’ll just need a DVD player.
